TREASURE PLANET -- Opened on Nov 27, 2002 Treasure Planet arrived in theaters on Nov 27. Critical reviews were quite positive, but the film opened with tough competition -- Harry Potter on one side, Lord of the Rings on the other. It is an excellent film, so see it on the big screen while you can. Don't wait for video. The film was released in regular theaters and in IMAX format simultaneously, a first for the industry. Treasure Planet is Walt Disney Feature Animation's latest offering, and is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island." Disney has produced Treasure Island before in live action movies. The company has owned the film rights to Treasure Island for just about forever. This time they present the story in a futuristic environment -- but one that still has that swashbuckling pirate feel. Marvin, Carol and Steve got to see a preview of the movie in downtown Minneapolis on October 17. (A preview showing for movie theater owners -- we lied to get in) It's fun to see how Treasure Island and Treasure Planet compare, how they are the same, and what new things have been added. To help compare them I got a copy of the book at the library to re-read. Here, and with apologies to Robert Louis Stevenson, is a summary of Treasure Island, reduced to 2 pages. You can thank me later. --------------------------
