The hurricane season has begun in Florida (June 1 –> Nov 30). Since this is the 50th celebration for Disneyland, I thought it would be appropriate if this year’s hurricanes all had names that were for Disney villains. Something like a “‘Most Villainous Hurricane Season On Earth.”

The rules for naming are — (1) It must be a Disney villain, or at least some Disney bad person — (2) The name must be suitable for a hurricane. (”Hurricane Heffalump” just doesn’t cut it…)

Here’s my list. Call the National Weather Service and let them know that they can use these. Enjoy!

So, what is the deal with the big black squares on the facades of both the Swan and Dolphin? They line up directly across from each other. Some say they represent where the monorails were to pass through the hotels on their way from Epcot down to the Downtown Disney area.

Alas, I fear that this is just another CM urban legend. The black squares are much too large and high up to be for a monorail. And all the hotel rooms and infrastructure that’s built into that space now does not speak of being well-designed for a “someday” monorail.

On the other hand, check the much smaller square feature on the side of the Swan, a few floors below the big black square. Much more monorail size and height. Don’t you think?

At least we can dream. . .

Here’s a link to a diagram of where an eventual extension to the monorail system was supposed to go, in relation to the Swan and Dolphin. The design shows the monorail passing by both hotels just to their east sides, and not through them. One hotel or the other would probably have had a station. This would be more in tune with the way the monorails go by the sides of the Polynesian and the Grand Floridian, rather than THRU like the Contemporary.

MKandSTOL.jpgLou Mongello’s little birdies reportedly told him that Disney may be planning on building a new Magic Kingdom-area Disney Vacation Club resort near the Short Take-Off & Landing (STOL) area to the east of the TTC. Click the map for a better idea of there this may be located.

The STOL is typically no longer used, but it was used during construction and was considered as a possible way to bring guests in from Orlando’s airport. Sometimes it’ll still see some action and cater to special visits such as celebrities or presidents and such.
